August can be one of the busiest times of the year for school leaders.
State exam results arrive. Timetables are being finalised. Staffing is being organised. Teachers are preparing to return.
At the same time, schools are trying to make sense of a huge amount of new information. That is why over 300 Irish schools now use Athena Reports.
Athena Reports provide schools with a detailed analysis of Junior Cycle and Leaving Certificate performance, helping leadership teams move beyond just percentages and towards meaningful insights.
Here are 10 ways schools are using Athena Reports to get more from their state exam results.
1. Saving school leaders time during a busy period
One of the biggest advantages schools mention is time. Instead of manually analysing results, schools can send their data to Athena and receive a full report within five working days.
2. Comparing results against national averages
Athena Reports allow schools to benchmark their Junior Cycle and Leaving Certificate performance against national outcomes. This gives schools a clearer understanding of where they are performing strongly and where further attention may be needed.
3. Benchmarking against similar schools
National comparisons only tell part of the story.
Athena also compares schools against similar cohorts, including DEIS schools, Irish-speaking schools, all-boys schools and all-girls schools.
The cohort information is collected and collated by Athena Analytics. For schools, that context can provide a more meaningful comparison.
4. Supporting school self-evaluation
Athena Reports are designed to support school self-evaluation and inspection preparation.
The reports include detailed subject analysis, historical trends and breakdowns that can help schools identify patterns over time.
5. Starting conversations earlier
For many schools, having reports ready when teachers return for the new term creates a stronger starting point for the academic year.
Noel Kelly, Principal of Coláiste Iósaef, says that early preparation matters: “You can have your Leaving Cert analysis for when your teachers come back in August which makes a big difference. It’s a good starting point.”
6. Making data easier to understand
State exam data can quickly become overwhelming.
Athena Reports is designed to present information in a way that is accessible and easy to interpret for leadership teams and subject departments.
That allows schools to focus less on processing data and more on discussing what it actually means.
7. Providing an independent perspective
For some schools, having external analysis can help encourage more open and constructive conversations.
Mr Burke echoed this point, adding that these independent results are excellent signifiers for third parties who want an overview of how the school is performing. He said: “You get asked for stats by the press, the parents or other people coming into the school, so it’s great to have the data so quickly.”
8. Identifying trends over time
Athena Reports do not just focus on one set of results.
Schools can also use the reports to examine trends and patterns across multiple years, helping leadership teams identify long-term strengths and areas for development.
9. Helping Schools Tell Their Story
Having clear data to tell your school’s story can make a big difference to both existing and prospective students.
St Gerald’s are doing this, using graphs and other data from the Athena Reports and showcasing them at open nights, at parents association, and at board of management meetings and clearly highlight what’s happening in the school.
In the words of Mr Burke, they are “very open and don’t hide anything. Parents can see exactly how the school is performing and what kind of results (their) students are achieving.”
10. Building on the Work Already Done
When Mr. Burke was a teacher, he saw the level of work put into creating reports by the previous principal: “He went through every grade and ensured then that all the data was correct and everything lined up. He would then compare it against the SEC (The State Examinations Commission) data and would feed that back to the teachers. But it was hugely time-consuming for him.”
Although this was accurate, it was far more difficult than trusting Athena Reports to help your school build a consistent record of performance and analysis. And it also could have led to a lengthy handover and another difficult task for the incoming principal.
Why Schools Continue to Use Athena Reports
Athena Reports are designed to create clearer conversations around performance, planning and improvement.
