Data for Good: How the Athena Tracker Uses Data to Help Students Reach Their Potential

The Athena Tracker is an intelligent, data-powered academic monitoring tool used by schools to track and support student progress. It helps teachers identify strengths, address areas for improvement and ensures that each student is given the opportunity to reach their own individual potential.

By using the Athena Tracker, secondary schools across Ireland can make the most of the data available to them. The software helps schools to understand each student’s potential in a given subject, at a given time. Knowing this allows schools to react when a student drifts below their own potential, and celebrate when they exceed it.

Schools use the Athena Tracker to gain deeper insights into each student’s academic journey. This enables more tailored teaching strategies and helps identify students who might require assistance. By tracking performance and identifying trends, the Athena Tracker ensures that no student falls through the cracks while shining a light on every student.

What data does the Athena Tracker use and what does it mean for schools?

To create a baseline potential grade for each student, the Athena Tracker uses assessment results and aptitude test scores. This is data that is already collected by the school. Athena Analytics is an Irish-owned and Irish-based company and all data is kept within the EU, in line with GDPR regulations.

Schools are completely within their rights to use the Athena Tracker.  Athena Analytics is fully GDPR compliant and all data is protected in accordance with GDPR guidelines. When a school works with Athena Analytics, it doesn’t forfeit any control. Athena Analytics simply acts as a data processor on behalf of schools, while the school retains complete control of their data and determines the lawful basis for processing student data.

Lawful bases for processing student data includes using third-party educational service providers to support teaching, learning, and student wellbeing. This is the same legal basis used for many systems already in use in schools, including management information systems, that have been used by secondary schools across Ireland for years. Data subject rights, including the right to erasure, remain fully respected and are handled promptly in line with GDPR requirements.

For Athena Analytics, data protection and privacy is paramount. Athena Analytics does not use student data to train artificial intelligence or large language models. Any refinement of statistical models underpinning Athena Tracker is carried out using anonymised and aggregated exam outcome data, with no pooling of personal data across schools. Athena Analytics adheres to strict data protection standards, including GDPR compliance and all data is securely stored and accessible only to those authorised by the school.

Athena Analytics was founded in February 2017 with the specific goal of helping secondary schools in Ireland make the most of their data and provide individualised care to each student. To this day, Athena’s mission remains the same — to empower schools to use their data to better understand and support each student individually.
